Minoxidil, chemically known as 6-(1-piperidinyl)-2,4-pyrimidinediamine-3-oxide, is an organic substance that clinically acts as a potassium channel opener, relaxes vascular smooth muscle directly, has a powerful small arterial dilating effect, decreases peripheral resistance and blood pressure, while having no effect on the volumetric vessels, and therefore promotes venous return. It also increases cardiac output and heart rate without causing postural hypotension due to reflex modulation and positive frequency effects. |
